OUR ILLUSTRATORS ANNUAL COMPETITION, now in its 69th year, is open to professional artists worldwide to submit works created within the past year across multiple categories. There is also an Uncommissioned category for newcomers and students in the field. Gold and Silver Medals are presented to the illustrators whose works are judged the best in each category. Entries are judged by a distinguished jury of Art Directors, Educators, Designers, and other industry professionals (more info below). Selected works are exhibited at the Museum of Illustration in two separate exhibitions, which together typically feature only 400 works chosen from thousands of submissions. Each exhibition is accompanied by a Reception and Awards Ceremony, and all accepted entries are reproduced in a full color book.

Deadline: October 16th 11:59pm EST

The SI Giveback Fund was created to help make the competition more accessible and assist artists who might not otherwise be able to afford the entry fee. The SI Giveback Fund covers the cost of one entry per person and is available on a first-come, first-served basis while funds last. If funding is available, the option to apply the fund will appear as a clickable selection in the In Progress tab of your submission. Interested in supporting other artists? Donate to the SI Giveback Fund here. Please include “Annual Fund” in the donation description.

THE CATEGORIES

*Advertising, Book, Institutional, and Editorial entries must be published or commissioned projects. You will be asked to provide the name of an art director and client.

*Surface Design, Product Design, Animation, and Uncommissioned are the only categories that accept works that were NOT commissioned or paid for by a company or agency.

The Jury for each category is composed of nine judges, with the exception of the Animation category. Judges are specialists in the category they review and include Art Directors, Educators, Designers, and other industry professionals. The jury is nominated by The Chair and changes with each competition. The Co-Chair will chair the following year’s competition. While we used to review works in-person, the process has been entirely remote since 2020, allowing us to welcome more international participants!
